At Kanetaka Hamono, a traditional blacksmith shop established in Kyoto in 1651, you can immerse yourself in authentic Japanese knife craftsmanship and visit a real working forge in the center of Kyoto.
 

About the Workshop

• This is not just a store — it’s a working blacksmith workshop where knives are made using traditional forging methods passed down through generations of craftsmen.

• The artisan smiths forge, quench, and shape steel right on site, creating high-quality knives used both by professionals and enthusiasts alike.
   

Forge & Studio Visit

• You can tour the forge, see the smith at work, and learn about the history and techniques behind Japanese knife making.

• The tour typically includes a demonstration of techniques and explanations about steel, forging, and blade finishing.

Knife-Making Experience

• The hands-on experience lets you forge a blade yourself under the guidance of an experienced smith.

• You’ll get to work with the furnace, hammer red-hot steel, and shape the blade — a rare chance to feel the power and precision of traditional blacksmithing.

• There are different course options, including making a single knife for yourself or couples working together.

• After forging, the blade is typically finished by the craftsmen. In many plans your custom knife will be shipped to you later, so you can take home a real, functional piece of your own creation.

• You can also select handle materials and opt for personalized engraving for an extra souvenir touch.

Practical Details

• Experiences vary in duration (from around 40 minutes up to a few hours) depending on group size and course selection.

• If you’re not participating in the hands-on session, you can still join the forge visit/tour.

• Finished knives are usually not taken home the same day; instead, the workshop completes the finer finishing and ships the knife to you (including overseas).
