Urushi Lacquerware Studio Visit & Chopstick-Making Experience
ー
Visit a traditional urushi (Japanese lacquerware) studio and discover the delicate artistry behind this centuries-old craft. During your visit, you will learn about the history of urushi, the process of harvesting and refining natural lacquer, and the meticulous layering techniques used to create beautiful lacquerware pieces.
You’ll experience this firsthand with a visit to Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, a historic Kyoto lacquer workshop and materials supplier with roots in refining lacquer and promoting traditional craftsmanship. Founded over 100 years ago, this studio lives and breathes urushi culture — from producing refined lacquer for artisans to hosting tours and workshops where you can learn about lacquer’s role in Japanese heritage.
After the studio tour, enjoy a hands-on chopstick-making experience. Under the guidance of a skilled artisan, you will shape, polish, and finish your own pair of wooden chopsticks, and then apply lacquer using traditional techniques to create your unique pair. Depending on the program, you may also decorate them with simple designs or learn basic lacquer application methods.
Your handmade chopsticks will become a meaningful souvenir and a lasting reminder of your time in Japan.
